The Problem With Our Schools
Schools have often felt the pressure to adhere to every single responsibility for their students, such as coordinating houses for homeless students, home-visiting programs, teaching children awareness of drug epidemics, gun violence, rape, and many other responsibilities that have been pushed onto schools instead of the parents of students. At the end of the day, the purpose of schools is to provide a safe place for children to learn.
Marginalized students are students that have been labeled, left out, discriminated against, or placed in a group because of their differences. The achievement gap comes from the fact that they lack the opportunity to "fit in" because of racism, sexism, or other forms of discrimination that occur in school, therefore this children are not given the same opportunities as their classmates who don't face the same discrimination. This doesn't mean that anything is wrong with these students but rather that they've been labeled by the majority and forced into a group because of what makes them different from everyone else. Instead of ignoring the marginalized groups in our schools and forcing people to feel shameful about their differences, we should bring light to what makes us all different from each other and recognize that it doesn't have to be something that we hide from. We all are unique and none of us is perfectly like anyone else and that's what makes each of us special. In schools we should continue to celebrate the cultures and backgrounds of our students and allow them to feel proud of their heritage and where they come from.

Hi Willow! I really like how you said, "we should bring light to what makes us all different from each other and recognize that it doesn't have to be something we hide" because it is so true. We shouldn't hide what makes us different from each other, especially in places like schools. Schools are supposed to be a safe place for students to grow in confidence and knowledge, not to be judged and be treated differently than other students.
ReplyDeleteHi Willow,
ReplyDeleteI think that you make a great point about how the school system has ultimately inherited a lot of problems that students face today and has been completely overburdened. I think that this comes from a failure in the government system and it has trickled down onto public schools. I agree with your statement that public schools should be a safe learning space for students. My question is, can the school be a safe learning space for students without dealing with all the other problems you mentioned? Unfortunately, it is not possible for kids to leave all their problems at home, especially if they are facing lack of basic needs, such as homelessness or poor nutrition. I wonder what sanctions could be put in place so the school system is not left to clean up so much mess. I do also agree with your point that one way that school can be a safe space for students is through ensuring that all kids are listened to and included regardless of their background. I think this is a great first step!
Hi willow! I really enjoyed your post! I agree schools number one responsibility should be to provide a safe place for children to learn. We should not encourage limiting anyone else’s ability to do that by marginalizing certain groups. I agree that celebrating what makes each child special is what each public school should strive to do!
